Going to the gym can often be a huge hassle. You're tired, you're cranky, you have a ton of things to do at home or at the office and you just can't wait to finish off the few remaining sets and go home.

What you need to shake off the blues and have you pumped up is some great workout music. There is nothing better to get you in the mood to lift bigger weights, run a little faster, and actually enjoy your time at the gym.

So, what are the best workout songs you can listen do when lifting weights or doing cardio? It's a matter of personal choice, of course, but here are my top 10 choices:

1. Jump - Van Halen

This sone is over 25 years old and is still as exciting as ever. When you hear that synthesizer playing that catchy tune you feel like jumping around yourself. Whenever I hear this particular tune at the gym I feel the blood pumping faster and I feel like I have a ton more energy.

2. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson

I know that Billie Jean isn't the fastest song but it has an awesome beat which is just what you need when you're working out. Billie Jean is one of my all time favorite running songs.

3. Eye of the Tiger - Survivor

This one hit wonder from the 80's is a song that's never turned down in volume only up. The drums are excellent, the high voice of the singer really plays on your nerves and makes you feel the anxiety of the hero of the song. It is a cruical piece in any collection of gym workout music.

4. Take On Me - A-ha

This Norwegian group exploded on the scene in the early 80s and this sone remains their biggest hit and popular to this day. If you saw the video clip which combined real video with animation then you know this is a classic in more than one way. The electronic opening bit sets the tone for the rest of the song and it keeps getting better and better.

5. The Final Countdown - Europe

Another one hit wonder from the 80s, this sone has one of the best opening bits which the synthesizer blasting away a super-catchy tune. This will get your heart pumping and your energy level soaring. Maybe it should be further up the spots of the best workout songs, what do you think?

6. Daytripper - The Beatles

I had to include this powerful and catchy song by my all time favorite group, the Beatles. Paul McCartney sings as beautifully as ever in this no. 1 hit from the 60s and the song remains as exciting as ever. Listen to this and you'll immediately experience a high even though the lyrics aren't that happy at all.

7. Sweet Child of Mine - Guns 'n' Roses

Axel Rose has a voice that you can either love or hate but in this song he hits every note right on. In addition, you can't beat that guitar and the song just seems to keep getting better and better as it goes along.

8. Living on a Prayer - Bon Jovi

I'm not really a fan of Bon Jovi but this song is certainly a classic of the pop-rock genre. The music is excellent, the guitars and drums really get you moving, and the the vocals of the entire band are second to none. Great for a party and a good workout song.

9. New Year's Day - U2

I don't know what gets me about this song but whenever it comes up in my ipod while I'm in the gym, I'm immediately filled with energy. This sone has it all, excellent vocals, massive guitar by the Edge, and just an awesome beat.

10. Dancing in the Dark - Bruce Springstein

The Boss nailed it with this one and it's no wonder that it remains a favorite closing number at his concerts. The tune is very simple but it's o-so catchy still. His voice is gruff and sometimes you can't even make out the words that easily but it all fits in to a rock classic which will get you to run faster or lift bigger weights.
